Many Year 12 students across NSW and Victoria are celebrating their university entrance scores.

But the peak body for universities reminds those who did not do as well as they hoped not to despair.

Universities Australia chief executive Glenn Withers says there are plenty of options for students whose scores didn't quite match expectations.

With deregulation of the sector starting from 2012, he said it was a great year to be seeking entry into university since a lot more places would be offered.

"Do look again at alternative degrees and institutions across the universities," he advised students.

"There are also good alternatives to university in the TAFEs and private colleges.

"And there are good pathways for later entry into universities following other studies or work."

Dr Withers congratulated students who got the tertiary entrance score they wanted.

Students in most other states and territories will find out their tertiary entrance scores next week.
